St Valentine’s Day has its origins in Ancient Roman times when the people would celebrate the festival of Lupercalia on 15th February. On the eve of the festival young men would draw the name of a girl out of a box to choose who would be their partner for the forthcoming celebrations.

St Valentine’s Day was made an official holiday in the 5th century to honour the Roman St Valentine who in 279AD was sentenced to death by the cruel emperor Claudius for defying his orders to prevent young soldiers from marrying. It is alleged that Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailor and on the eve of his execution sent a letter to her signed ‘from your Valentine’.

There are many stories of who St Valentine was, but what is certain is that for centuries it has become the day when people throughout the world declare their love for each other.

The custom of giving Valentine’s Day flowers began in the 17th century when the Swedish king, Charles II, introduced the language of flowers from Persia. This was a language that was to flourish in the Victorian times, with flowers becoming the favoured way of telling someone their feelings. Suitors of young women would present them with a tussie-mussie, a small bouquet of specially selected flowers that would convey a certain message of love.

By ordering a bouquet of flowers for Valentine online you can continue the tradition today. Red roses have become synonymous with Valentine’s Day, representing true love in the language of flowers. Roses were the favoured flower of Venus the goddess of love and red is a symbol of passion and feeling. Red carnations, too, are a favourite choice for Valentine flowers, telling someone of your admiration, and how your heart aches for them.
